Shelter Tas’ Annual Report 2021

Shelter Tas is the peak body for housing and homelessness services. Our membership includes all Tasmania’s funded Specialist Homelessness Services and registered Community Housing Providers. Over 50 Specialist Homelessness Services work in all regions of Tasmania to support people experiencing or at risk of homelessness to find safe and secure homes. Last year
these services assisted 6 400 Tasmanians. Community Housing Providers are supporting over eight thousand households and building new homes across Tasmania.

Altogether the sector employs almost 900 people and is expanding. The context for the work of Shelter Tas and our members in the last year, however, has been the unrelenting pressure on the housing and homelessness system. The waiting list for social housing has now passed 4 000 applications. The cost of renting or purchasing a home is now higher than ever, and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) has reported that the ‘turn away’ rate from Tasmanian Specialist Homelessness Services is at a record 36 per day.
