On the 13th of August, the Tasmanian Liberal Government announced the Building your future plan they will take to the next election. This plan includes increasing the target of new affordable homes from 900 by 2019, to 2,700 by 2025.
Shelter Tas welcomes this investment of 1,800 additional new homes as an important downpayment in meeting our State’s chronic shortage of affordable housing. With a backlog of over 3,000 social housing applications, we would like to see the majority of this investment targeted to new social housing supply to guarantee this new stock will remain affordable for low income Tasmanians in the long term and house those most in need.
